Grodno to hand over title Belarus’ Capital of Culture to Brest 12 December

GRODNO, 5 December (BelTA) - Brest, next year's Capital of Culture of Belarus, will take over the title from Grodno in a ceremony at the Grodno Regional Drama Theater on 12 December, BelTA learned from Vitaly Mamochkin, the head of the ideology, culture and youth affairs department at the Grodno City Hall.

The ceremony will be built around the concept of a time travel to remember the biggest cultural events of the year. Guests will see the pieces of the festivals and national holidays, concerts and national fests, plein-airs and exhibitions. It is expected that this "journey" will be filled with a lot of special effects and a light show. The ceremony will also feature performances by famous singers from Grodno and Belarus.

According to Vitaly Mamochkin, the event will be attended by officials of Brest who will take over the honor from Grodno Mayor Mechislav Goi, other regional administrations and also cities twinned with Grodno.

During the event Grodno will sign a new twinning agreement with the Russian city of Tambov.

Famous local craftsman Vladimir Panteleyev designed a sculpture in tribute to the Grodno as Capital of Culture of Belarus. The stone medal with the inscription "The Capital of Culture of Belarus 2014" with the symbols of the city will be installed in the city center near the building of the former national archives.

More than 300 events were held during the campaign "The Capital of Culture of Belarus 2014". Concerts, performances, exhibitions and other events will continue in December and early next year.
